That is my world. That is my master. That pays the bills. The act itself revealing the true colours of those who suffer and it is a sad fact that those colours are not lustrous hues, but more shades of black and grey, the beast behind the eyes rearing with snarled lips and balled fists, blood dripping from gashes in the head.
I am a nightclub manager and I love my job. I love walking around my club, watching the masses enjoy themselves as the beat pumps hard and the dance lights twist through the haze of the smoke machine. I love the music being played loud; I love the variety which each day brings. I love the wearisome tasks I complete day after day. I am good at my job. I enjoy my job, but I can’t help but think that it is time to change the career that I love so much.
Six years I have strutted with the confidence of knowing that I am damn good at what I do, six years of blood, sweat and tears working my way up from bar crew, to a unit controller (in charge of the venues finances) to eventually reaching my dream of being a manager of a 2,600 capacity venue with one of the UKs largest Late Night Entertainment Companies. The club I work for, a pioneer in the realms of super-clubs: state of the art technology dripping from the walls, the best digital sound systems on offer, the air-con which is temperamental and decides when it wishes to work (often not). My club is fifth in the company with a turn over which rivals other clubs within the city, we dominate the city in which we stand. We are masters of enjoyment; we offer what no-one else offers.
But I refuse to believe that this is where my life lies. I refuse to continue to ignore this burning ambition within me. I want to achieve something greater in my life. I want to make a difference, however small, to somebody’s life. I want to lose them in their own imagination. I want to hook them, make them smile, make them think, make them cry: give them some glimmer of hope through the darkness. I want to give something back.
I am not naive; I have seen things that most others might not. I have seen people at their worst. I have seen lovers kiss; I have seen haters rip off an ear, tear at the throat; slice the scalp with glass revealing the bone within. I have seen some things that I would care to forget. Yet through it all, I have many more memories which still to this day fill me with pleasure. Through the years of toiling behind the bar and up I have met my loves and lost them. I have been nomadic, moving around the country chasing my (then) goal. I have realised who I truly am and who I aspire to be.
