Got an idea for a feature? Found a problem? Hate what going down at DearCupid? Let me know and I'll try to make it right.

I have no idea... Drop me an email next time it happens and I'll look into it. Possibly something to do with strange characters in the email (any ampersands or things like that?)

It would be a great idea to allow breaks/paragraphs in forum posts. It's a dread to look at a massive block of text/words.

This forum thing is a great idea but I have trouble finding the ones I've posted on. Any way of doing something like subscribing to threads so that you can be emailed when someone adds a msg as with the main site or putting the info on the Your Account page or something?

I think you should let readers address questions to particular agony aunts if they particularly like somebody's advice. Then let the question display publically so others can answer as well.

Hi Suorpio

Now that the private mail system is in place, this is something I'm seriously considering.

The plan would be to have an "ASK THIS AUNT" type link on everyone's column. When the question is approved and published, the aunt who was "asked" will get a PM with a link to the question.

For me I think it would help if the font was smaller or headings smaller to each problem on the main site. I posted a problem in April and within a few days it was relegated to the archive of April at the bottom of the page so the risk for people is that they don't get replies cos their question isn't as readily visible?

Maybe listings of the problem heading, by whom, date posted and number of replies?

Other than that this is a great site and I'm trying to post replies to people as much as I can :-)

Hi Angel

I'm not sure that listing more questions on the home page will result in more answers/question - given that each agony aunt is probably operating at their maximum throughput anyway (if that makes sense).

The answer:question ratio is going up consistantly, but slowly (currently 3.15 answers per question). I may experiment with slightly more questions on the home-page to see if that helps.

Thanks for the feedback!!!

Andrew

PS. every question will get an answer because it will always be displayed on the "unanswered" link and lots of agony aunts start there when answering questions.

I think it would be a good idea to have a "Edit this message" link by all the questions and answers [assuming you are logged in as a moderator ;)]

e.g. I recently saw an answer that was giving incorrect advice and there were consequent messages arguing it so it would have been confusing for the person who wrote the original question. If we could moderate incorrect messages we could just put something [removed by a moderator] or something similar.

Also there has been a few times where I've had a typo and had to find an answer that needs to be published, and manually gone through each of the messages until I find my one.

Hi Peter

Can you send me the URL of the incorrect advice thing, I'd be interested to take a look.

I'm actually going to put in something to stop published questions/answers being modified after a certain period of time. I don't think typos or whatever matter too much unless it's in the question title.

Hi, I have an idea for a feature that I love using on another site.

It would be nice to be able to recieve an email letting you know that someone else has posted to the question that you already posted in. Maybe you could put another check box by the message that you reply to that says something like "If you would like to recieve an email when another answer is posted, click here". That way if you are interested in a certain question, you will know when someone else has something new to say about it, instead of having to keep checking back. This idea would also work good for the forums as well.

Hi Andrew

I think it would be good to do an IP lookup of previous posts, I don't know what anonymity problems this would bring but a good example is here:

http://www.dearcupid.org/question/my-stepdad-would-rather-have-sex-with-me.html

I think the feeling is pretty unanimous from the replies that the post might be suspicious. If we could click on the IP address we could see a history and confirm if the post is a wind up or not?

PS I like the cosmetic changes you've just added :)

Hi Dr. Pete

It would bring up privacy concerns and would jeapordise anonymity.

BUT! We have the next best thing.

The moderators screens show you what %age of previous posts from that IP have been rejected/approved ditto for %age reject/approved from a username (the column to the right). So when modding it is useful to check out those percentages. The percentage is posts approved so high %ages are "safer"... low %ages mean the ip has a history of rejection so look extra carefully at whether the question seems legit.

I actually checked out the screen for that particular post, there were no previous posts from that IP so there was no history of rejection (or approval).

A.

I would like to add to this. I've been moderating for quite a while now and I agree there are questions that do seem 'highly' untruthful. But-weird things happen in this world and there is no way of really knowing. The moderators must have to use their own sound judgement. I say, if it looks just too bizarre to be a truthful question, the answer is simple-don't approve it. And really look at the 'percentages! But-it must be said that anytime an IP address comes up repeatedly, with 'questionable' postings, Andrew has let the moderators know. We had this happen, a couple years ago with one IP address and the moderators were alerted.

I agree with Irish, its best to use your own Judgement, and the thing with IP addresses they can change anyway, what I mean by that is, I access this site from 3 different computers, home work, laptop etc.. and Im guessing that others can too, so it wouldnt nescessarily prove too much using that in anycase, as well there could be one pc at a libary or internet cafe, used by countless people, yes highly unlikely they all go to the same place but you never know! So if a question does look suss or way out there, its probably best not to approve it, but it can be hard to tell sometimes, especially if you feel that person really needs advice. I guess I like to see the good in most people and hope that the odd hoaxer will get bored anyway.
