'X' in a text message, is it just for people close to you or for anyone and everyone?

Ok, so this may sound strange to some but agreed upon by others - I just want to know weather I'm being unnecessarily stupid and to get others views.

I've been with my girlfriend for just over a year and we moved in with each other two weeks ago. As she was texting last night, I happened to look while she was typing and it was her male kickboxing instuctor. That was all fine to me as he was helping her choose a punch bag for the garage. What got me was that they both finished their respective texts with a 'X' (kiss).

For me, a kiss in a text is either for your partner, family memebers or very close freinds - not anyone and everyone - especially not to the opposite sex?!

Would like to hear others view on this because as a man, I would think a kiss from a girl meant something - or am I just old fashioned??

Sweety Pie agony auntActually, I usually find less is more with texting... let me explain.

I know a lot of my guy friends don't bother with x's at the end of messages. Personally I find all girls usually send at least one.

I usually match the person. If they send me 3, i'll give them 3 back. I usually do this for my close friends, female and male. However my boyfriend and I text so often i'll usually just give him one, sometimes none, as he knows me so well I know he won't read anything into it.

I think its a girl thing, they like to send x's :)

cute angel agony auntHey there,

Well an'x' can be sent to anyone not necessarily be someone u love,u can also send it to friends..I use 'x' a lot..its become so common that now people end their texts with an 'x'..like 'hey how r u doing!?hope everything is good..take care x..

So u see' x' has now become like a full stop..and she's ur girlfriend u know her for a year now,she may find it offensive u doubted her over an 'x' but if u really want to get this out of ur head then talk to her..

I would suggest u say something like' hey a friend of mine from school got in touch with me,we used to be close it was nice to hear frm her again but what I found wierd was she ended her text with an 'x'..I thought she had a boyfriend..!

When u say this u wait for her response and u'l know what she thinks of it and in this way u will get your answer without even questioning her directly..

All the best x ;)

I think that the X doesnt mean anything in this case. I have a female friend that puts "X" at the end of all her texts and emails to any of her friends, family etc . If the content of the sms wasnt "steamy" or ambiguous i dont think the "x" means anything. it's kind of like the people who over use "lol" or smileys.

I would type X to anyone. 1 x is ok, 2 is ok, 3 is bad. That's the rules I know. I wouldn't worry about it.

I personally put an 'x' at the end of every text i write, no matter who it is

It's just a habbit for me, even though im in a relationship

Means nothing, its not really ' a kiss' in my opinion so you shouldnt really worry :)

some people just do it because the other person does it as well so its ' polite' to put one at the end

hope this helps! x :)

So_Very_Confused agony auntfor this old lady a text is a way to get information to someone... "i'm on my way" or "be there in an hour" or something like that..

I've never sent a kiss or a hug via text not even to my partner and don't get it in general.

Xx-Scorpio-xX agony auntI guess everyone views this differently, but for me i put 1 'x' for female friends, and depending on the conversation 1 to 5 'x' for my boyfriend~ though for some reason i never put 2. I used to put 1 'x' for guy friends but not anymore. I never put them for family.

My ex boyfriend used to put an x on all his female friends and me several. My current boyfriend only gives them to me :)

A reader, anonymous, writes (15 June 2012):

I have many friends from the UK and they all end texts with an x at the end to everyone. Even when in messenger they seem to end each sentence with an x at the end. I don't do that, I reserve it only for those special people in my life, but I have found it to be quite common for people to do this. I don't understand it myself, I think I must be quite old fashioned too, I just accept it is their way of doing things. Though my UK boyfriend does end his messages with others with an x, he always ends one's to me with xx, it's just his way.
