I am 6 months pregnant, my boyfriend has just left me, and although I think he is prepared to pay maintenance, does he have any custody rights? We are not married, nor are we living together and I have been supporting myself through the duration of this pregnancy. I do not think he will be there at the childs birth either therefore not being on the babies birth certificate. Please help, anyone with insights to the law, or maybe a single mom whos been thru the same?

It does not matter if your partner wants to pay custody or not... if you want or need him to, he has a leagal duty. Unfortunatley, unless you feel you or your baby would be in danger by him having contact with you, he is entitled to contact. If you stronggly object to him having contact, and have valid reasons to back this up, then a court hearing will be needed... however, the courts generally prefere it if you can work out custody and visiting amongst yourselves. Just because the father is not at the birth, it does not mean you cant write his name on the birth certificate... but if you do, he will need to either come along with you, or sign something giving you permission.
I do feel for you, as bringing up a child on your own is sure to be hard work! (But it's amazingly rewarding... so ive heard!)
Good luck in the future, and you'll have to let me know how things work out in the end for you.
