I'm totally unsure what to do about it, I am worried if I tell him how I feel it will make things awkward and/or ruin the friendship. We have known each other for seven years but nothing has ever happened between us. Tonight he sent me a text message, totally out of the blue, telling me that I am gorgeous. He was drunk, but even so he has never done anything like it before or said anything like it to me. I am so confused! Help please?

Hmmm. This is a tough one. If you really like him, then I would tell him. Take a chance. I would rather know what the outcome is, over wondering what could have been. If worst comes to worst, you will be out of this wonder, and you will get over your feelings for this person eventually, and still remain friends. Does this help?
