It can be a scary world out there. Society can put a lot of pressure on us to "act" in a certain way. I would advise you just to be your own person and be confident in yourself and who you are. Don't feel you have to act a certain way for anyone.
Lots of people admire and even envy celebrities, I feel so sorry for them. Because they are in the spotlight all the time they have so much pressure put upon them always to look "perfect." Their lives are not their own. Like my colleague below rightly said, that's why so many of them are in clinics drying out with drug or alcohol problems. At the end of the day they're human the same as we are, they just have more pressure on them to BE a certain type of person. Poor them!
Never be intimidated by ANYONE and always remember no one is perfect, not even the ones that give you the critical eye. If they talk about you they're either, jealous, envious or plain insecure and you'll find they have much deeper problems that you'll ever have! Just be happy with yourself and if someone does make a verbal pop at you, laugh or ignore it and think "boy are they insecure."

Nobody likes to be mistreated or ridiculed. People in the spotlight tend to grow a thick skin. They have to or they succumb to the pressure of the media. That's why you hear of so many celebrities that abuse alcohol and drugs.
For you to be generally afraid of that happening to you, sounds like you may have a social phobia. You might be a good idea to talk to a therapist about it.
Good luck!
