A reader, anonymous, writes (21 January 2009):

If you have had unprotected sexual intercourse after your last period then it might be because you are pregnant.

But, if it hasn't come in over a year and you're obviously not pregnant, then i would contact your primary physician immediately.

don't worry this is normal it takes around two years for your period to settle into the every 28 days pattern, however if its been way too long since your last period and you really are worried then go and see a doctor and they can tell you what you need to know. x

Everybody is different, they will come and go forever. Unless you go on the pill then you'll know when you are going to get them.

But if you want to put your mind at easy go and see your doctor.

MutantKitten agony auntIf you're very thin, this might be a reason.

To have your period, you must have good nutrition. Many female athletes and models lose their period, because their % body fat dropped too low, which signals a lack of adequate nutrition. Other reasons are stress, or hormone irregularities.

Are you sexually active? Because it could also mean pregnancy...

The only person who can tell you for sure though is your doctor. This is definitely something you should make an appointment for.
