Why does this girl freeze up around me?

Question - (29 September 2010) 4 Answers - (Newest, 29 September 2010)
A male Ireland age 30-35, anonymous writes:

There's this girl I like...a lot. I notice her staring and smiling at me when she thinks I can't see her. She also makes long eye contact with me without saying anything.

When I talk to her she seems shy and submissive. She fidgets (such as taking out her phone and pressing buttons for the sake of it) and gets very clumsy when I look at her. Sometimes when I try to talk to her when we're alone she freezes up and does not say a word, avoids eye contact and just walks away.

I'm really nice and relaxed towards her so why does she find me so intimidating?

She's shy dude, simple as that. She sounds like she likes you and she sounds like she has all these crazy feelings and things going on in her head when you're talking to her.

Stop beating around the bush and ask her out already. Her nervousness most likely comes from a longing for you to like her too, so she's very aware and self conscious of how she's acting around you. That's not going to change while she has this niggling doubt as to what you think of her. She's going to be constantly on guard worried she'll make a mistake until you seal the deal.

The only way she'll start relaxing with you is when she finds out from you that you like her.

Remember you're the guy, here in Ireland we're the ones that have to make things happen. That's especially the case with shy girls. She's probably thinking you have no interest in her as you haven't asked her out yet because if you want my honest opinion you're taking your time about it. I learned a long time ago that it's best to act quick in these situations and make your intentions clear from the start.

If you don't someone else might beat you to it, also there's a perception amongst Irish girls that guys that don't act on it mustn't really like them, or they don't like the enough or just want to be friends (that's the worst one by the way, because when a girl switches her feelings for you from romantic to friendship then it's pretty much impossible to come back from that)

Do what those jock, rugby playing ego maniac idiots do and stop thinking and just do it. Those guys are successful because they go for it, they might try 10 women in one night but one will say yeah and no one remembers the other girls. Girls like guys who will go get what they want, so stop waiting and just do it.

She's shy, but at the same time, wants you to react by trying more and more to get closer to her. Just keep trying to talk and get to know her. She's leading you on in a good way :)

She might not even know where to go from there for lack of experience, so just start with small gestures and such. Ask her little questions, and try to stay at the same pace as her. But if you really like her, as you say you do, wait for a time when you're alone together and straight up ask her out! You've already realized the obvious, which is that you both like each other, so you have nothing to lose. The worst she can do is reject you, in which case you can just keep trying again. She's displaying all the signs of fear of displaying how much she likes you, so show her that it's easier to do than what she's showing you, by asking her out and being upfront about your own feelings. She'll follow your lead and come out of her shell eventually.

She's just young, full of anxiety, and nervous. This is quite normal. Youre not intimidating it sounds...she just doesnt know how to react and that comes with maturity. How old is she? Try bringing some humor into play...like when she fidgets or is clumsy think of somethin witty to say. Like when she plays with her phone say "You dont need to call the FBI they took me off their website awhile ago" and then wink at her. I use this all the time lol as im arab. Or think of somethin else...it'll make her feel a bit more comfortable and less awkward as humor tends to relax people, esp girls. Good luck.
