reader, anonymous, writes (10 November 2009): its a common thing for someone with pica. It is caused by a mineral deficiency. I have heard of women eating dirt also. Just tell her doctor, it can be treated easily. :)

Maybe she has calcuim or mineral deficiency? Some people eat chalk for the same reason, try taking minerals, see if the cravings sease, if not go the doctor :)

The only things I can think of is that they remind her of something in her past, or that she somehow enjoys the discomfort (or perhaps this is a sign of self harm?). Have you asked her about it? And ahs she spoken to a doctor, eating all that can't be too good for her.
