A male United Kingdom age 36-40, anonymous writes:

I feel like such a loser I was a late starter and lost my virginity at the age of 20. To my currant girlfriend. You hear about and read about sex all the time and are keyed into believing that its abnormal to wait that long. My girlfriend lost hers three years before I met her at 15, I also read an article she wrote about the average age to lose your virginity was 16 or under. I feel ashamed to have lost it so late and was embarresed when my friends found out through my girlfriend. I don't know why this bothers me so much. Please can anyone help

I lost mine aged 23/24 (was so close to my birthday I cant exactly remember). I'm not embarrassed at all. Why? Because there's bugger all wrong with that! Why feel ashamed of something that is neither wrong or bad in any way? You're wasting your time feeling bad about something that shouldnt because it's normal. Once you get older you'll look back at this and wonder why you felt like this trust me.

A male reader, Dr. John United States +, writes (24 March 2007):

Dr. John agony auntDon't believe everything you read or hear. I lost my virginity to my wife at age 23. We have now been married 27 years as of this month. She however was not a virgin. I am proud to have waited. She, on the other hand, still regrets that she gave up her virginity at 17.

Anymore it is a rare person who waits and usually because they are misled by the same feelings that you are. Let me assure you though it takes no small amount of strength to save yourself for marriage, but the rewards are often great. I have a daughter, age 22, who is still a virgin and is determined to stay that way till she is married. Let me tell you, she is extremely proud of herself.

If it were me, I would be embarrassed to admit that I lost my virginity so soon. Doc.
