It is not uncommon for men starting in their 40.s to have problems with erections and keeping an errection. I understand that the better care a man has taken care of himself has a lot to do with this issue. Another possible cause could be the anticipation of the act and him wanting to be at his best and satisfy you. I am sure this is a slap to his ego. There are many male enhancers now on the market that will help with this problem...again, his health has to be at a state that he can take the medication.

cupidus agony auntHow long has it been since these guys have had sex?

If it's been along time, they are going to be worried about their performance. A lot of vocal encouragement and possibly some dirty talk may help. Keeping the conversation humorous and light will offer them what they need most, and that is a relaxed state.
