If you don't like using toothpaste I've heard somewhere that you can use baking soda. You can buy it in the supermarket. You know what it is right? Ok, just checking. :)
Also is Listerine ok with you or is it a problem too? You could also try Brushaways (disposable finger toothbrushes) but they have a minty taste and I'm not sure if that will go down well with you. Just some suggestions here I hope you find them useful. If not then you should see your dentist and see what he/she says.

Hey again Anonymous,
Okay - this is going to sound really stupid, but did you happen to get any soap in your mouth recently? LOL I know when I was a kid, I got lazy and didn't feel like going "all the way upstairs" to get a new tube of toothpaste, so I used bar soap on my toothbrush. The taste stayed in my mouth for over a week and I couldn't get rid of it!! (Why do kids do such stupid things?!) haha
So since I'm guessing you didn't have any soap recently ^_^, here's what else I thought of:
Are you sure what's happening isn't in the water iteself, and not the toothpaste? I would hate to think that you're using contaminated water!! Sometimes different elements and even junk from the dump can leak into water pipes that lead into people's homes. Maybe you should check to see whether or not that is an issue in your area.
If it isn't, then I think the health food store toothpaste is a good idea. Maybe try using Tom's* (there are TONS of different toothpastes they carry). I've not used it myself, but I know people who use it and haven't had any complaints.
^_^

My diet hasn't changed and I am only 30. It happened suddenly. I brushed my teeth one morning and had to just spit it out and rinse my mouth straight away. It was like dirty bathwater. I went to the shops and bought another toothbrush and tootpaste, but that was the same.
Maybe it is psychological, I just don't know. I just thought maybe this has happened to somebody else who could have shed me some light on the subject.

yeah if it keeps up talk to a doctor. One of the main ingredients in most soaps is also in most toothpastes.... I dunno, it's probably not that but I'm just throwing the idea out there. You could give a natural toothpaste in a different flavour a try cos they don't have that ingredient. Check out health store kind of places. If it keeps up though talk to a doctor. It's probably nothing but it does seem to be really bugging you a lot. It's probably nothing dangerous but it would be good to be sure

Hi Anonymous,
Hvae you changed your diet recently? Maybe it's just your tastebuds changing as you age - people's tastes can change after a certain amount of time so that things they used to really enjoy taste horrible, or vice versa. Same thing happened with me and pickles. I used to HATE pickles growing up. Then I tried one a couple years ago and it tasted really good.
I would also suggest using mouthwash to gargle with before and after brushing your teeth. At least until you figure out what's going on - if anything. Like the last poster said, if you are really worried about this, then maybe consult a doctor.
Take care.

But although they are minty, the mint taste is replaced with a soapy taste after a couple of seconds. I have bought 3 new toothbrushes too, as I thought somebody had rubbed mine in soap as a prank.
I have always used popular brand toothpaste, but they all lose the taste after around 5 seconds.
Mint chewing gum does not have this effect, only toothpaste.
