He is older than me and has a girlfriend who he has been dating for a long time. Although I've got to know him and realised that he isn't a jackass (which is what I thought of him before) and I like him as a friend but not in any other way. But the thing I dont understand is if I don't fancy him than why do I feel so jealous and bitter when he is around his girlfriend ?

Your jealousy and bitterness could stem from the fact that he shares similar good times with his girlfriend and you feel a bit marginalized.
It is a competition over someone's time and not neccessarily someone's heart.
