reader, anonymous, writes (23 October 2010): It's all biologically based programming. The two sexes do not work the same for reproduction and they need different things. Men don't get their bodies hurt by sleeping around as much as women do, and they potentially stand to gain more from it. Women don't benefit as much by sleeping around in terms of reproduction, and they stand to hurt their husband's chances of reproducing more if they do it.
Back in the old days a virgin bride was carrying no sexual diseases, was more likely to be fertile, did not have ex-BFs living nearby to sleep with on the side, and was for sure not carrying another man's pregnancy at the time of the wedding. A virgin husband? What's the benefit of that? It usually just meant he was less attractive than the sexually active men. The wife didn't really benefit from it so she was not built to care so much.
Yes, it's all outdated now. men should logically stop holding these outdated views in the modern world. birth control and disease testing and paternity testing have made most of these feelings obsolete. But if we are going down that road then there is plenty of illogic on both sides. women should logically not like the men they like today either. I don't hear anyone expecting women to wake up tomorrow and change what they are attracted to. And what is the harm in men looking at porn? Women react like these other women are real threats to her relationship, can't they just logically stop feeling hurt about it? Unfortunately it's not that easy for any of us to override nature.

I am still a virgin, so I don't know how true that is.
But I do know a lot of my "girl" friends that lose control and give over to the guy completely cuz it's their first.

reader, anonymous, writes (21 October 2010): Traditionally it's down to purity, virtue and a religious male domination control thing. There is a "clean and innocent" label attached to virgins because of this. Which makes virgins a prize for a lot of men, even though the sex is usually awkward, painful and crap. Taking a girls innocence is a trophy.
Biologically we guys are designed to go for girls that are less likely to have another mans sperm in her to ensure that any child born has our genes. We men can make lots of babies daily whereas a woman can only make one every 9-10 months (not counting twins etc.) So genetically we're predisposed to making sure that when we procreate the baby definitely has our genes, whereas obviously the woman knows the baby has hers. This way we don't put our time and effort raising a baby from another mans gene pool, someone not of our bloodline.
That's kind of where the no sex before marriage thing came about too, as marriage was traditionally a life long commitment to one person, therefore no previous kids and definitely only that mans kids. That was the theory anyway.
Although times have changed somewhat those things are still very relevant. We humans as a species haven't really evolved much physiologically since our hunter gatherer days.

 Men like having something that is new, untouched, and only theirs.
They like to own.
They hate something second-hand, that has already been owned by another man.
They also like to dominate, and to be in charge, and to have exclusive rights.
And physically, virgins are less 'used', or potentially stretched, and therefore the mechanics of sex work better more easily and the man gets more pleasure more easily.
And they like to be the only man in their girl's life ...

 Jmtmj is on the money again! I'll add that there is a bit of the "conquest factor" that also plays into it. She'll likely remember the guy she lost her virginity to forever. Because of that, some asshole guys look at taking a girl's virginity as a trophy that they brag to their friends about. Watch out for those virgin hunters!
