Why can't I say the word "Love" to anyone?

I've known this guy for three years and we were just friends and the other day he said he loved me, but i just cant get the words out of my mouth. I dont no how i feel, i've never been able to tell anyone i love them, not even the people who are the closest to me, but they dont understand what should i do?

Well, maybe you've attached too much fear to the word.

Or maybe it represents too much control. If I love you, I'm responsible for your feelings. Maybe there are sad memories around it, a dying pet or family member. Everything I love dies kinda thing.

Maybe for a while you could use a substitute word until it gets comfortable for you. Even a made up word.
