Anyways, for about 6 years she was in and out of my life; she would come back and say that she was clean and a couple days later she would be gone. The thing I'm having trouble with is remembering much about that time period. It started 7 years ago and I can only recall big events. Even if I recall the event, I can't remember the beginning or the end, just the middle. How can I remember more? Why can't I remember most of it? Is this even something I should be thinking about or should I get over it? Thanks.

It sounds like it was a very traumatic time for you hun - you probably blocked things out. Maybe thats for the good? At any rate, perhaps counseling would be good for you just to vent to someone. Hope everything will be ok for you!

When children have a normal childhood distrupted then they can just work on auto pilot. You've probably had some trauma in your early days, possibly due to your mothers neglect because of her habit. Was there anyone else in y our life, brothers sisters, dad, uncle, aunt, neighbours. You need to try to talk to them to build some memories for you. Your childhood is like a jigsaw puzzle and all the pieces are all over the place. Take it back as far as you can remember, see if you can find photos, stories behind them. School friends, where you lived. This is quite common with some of the foster children i have in, we do 'life story ' work and that helps them retain some memories for when they leave me. I would suggest some therapy, they can unlock your memories for you. But be careful because some memories are not very nice and you may be shutting them out for a reason.
