 It's because in the porn industry penis size is a must!! and in pornography they will make a point that this is important. However in reality it's not that important.
Secondly it has a lot to do about the security and if a guy has a bigger one then he is better, this has happened for thousands of years. But again it dosent matter.
It's in our human nature to be competative in the sexes.
If your talking about a partner ask him has he ever had any complaints? I bet the answer is no! it's the same with girls breasts my gf friends complain all the time, where I see and many other guys see, they are just fine the way they are.

 Same reason women obsess about breast sizes. Some guys are insecure as it is and believe all their worth is assembled in their joystick.. Same with women, who think we should all run around with triple D's like Pamala Anderson in order to attract Mr. right.

 Guys are obsessed because it's makes them feel more powerful and better than other guys.That's why if a guy isn't big he asks if it's normal,so he is assured that other guys are the same size.
Also they are obsessed about size because it's a huge insecurity.I'm a guy so I may be wrong but aren't females insecure about their breast size?

 Not all guys are obsessed with the size of their penis, maybe they lack in other areas so they feel that the size of the penis means everything.
I know that i'm a good person, so the size of my penis means nothing to me, 10" or 1" I would still feel the same about myself.
