At 18 you should start having them only if you have had your first sexual incounter. Your papsmear would really hurt if you still had your hymen. After that it is once a year. You should have one done it can detect any early problems and just make sure everything looks healthy.

Here, they write to us when its due. I think it varies all over the country though to be honest. My sister is 2 hours away from me and she is recommended 5 yearly. My area is 3.
Mine is suppose to be yearly because of my history, and ive been threatened with being struck off by the doctor as his patient once because i didn't go and have it done after 2 reminders. Ooops lol

I thought it was every 3-5 yrs here in the Uk?
I had my first at 21, 5 yrs after losing my virginity, and it was abnormal. I ended up having loop diathermy in London Chelsea and Westminster hospital for women. Ive been fine ever since, but i did stop taking the contraceptive pill because i believe that played a part.
Now i have to have paps every year. So i would go as soon as you can to be honest. Cervical cancer is as common in young women as in older women. Probably more so.

As soon as you start sex it's best to get it done. Contact your doctor for further advice relevant to the country in which you live.

PAPS are nothing to be afraid of, they are a little uncomfortable, but well worth the life long benefits. So try to get one as soon as possible. It will give you a peace of mind, and medical documentation that says everything is "OK"
