I think 4 months is enough time to start talking! And its definitely enough time considering you've started hanging out again AND having sex. He's had enough time to mill over whats happened and its about time the pair of you discussed whats going on with you. I think its a bit silly messing with your minds and going back to having a physical relationship if your not planning on getting back together, just ask him whether he sees in future in the both of you and if not i'd walk away to prevent hurting yourself and him even more.
