Hi there, everyones favorite subject is themselves, ask him questions about himself, see how much you can get out of him without giving anything away about you, it's a great game and he'll come away thinking how nice it is to talk to you. You'll get loads of insight on him and each time you talk to him it will be easier because you'll know him better.

If you feel like you have nothing to say then perhaps do something which you can both talk about afterwards. Suggest going to the cinema or going bowling. If you go with some other friends too it may take the pressure off. If you're talking online suggest playing some stupid online games with him which will also get you talking and interacting. Alternatively, just asking how his day has been, what he has been up to and telling him what you've been up to might help bring up some new conversation topics to build on.
Good luck!

. what have you been up to?
. what are you doing at the weekend/been doing at the weekend?
. did you watch ..... last night?
. talk about the weather
. is he any classes with you? ask about how he's finding the work or homework?
conversation will eventually flow, and if you ask questions he'll ask back and you just go with it. good luck!
