Simply put "friends with benefits" are friends you have the benefit of sleeping with, no strings attached. Lovers are two people who have feelings for one another and have some form of commitment together.

Friends with benefits are friends who have sex but no semblance of a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship. Lovers often have a relationship also or are connected to the idea of an extramarital affair.
