A reader, anonymous, writes (20 July 2008):

I'm on Microgynon 30 (a type of Pill) right now, and there are about.. 17 side effects? Don't worry though! I've heard that medicines and their possible side effects affect people in different ways. Like, some women on this particular pill might not even get side effects! I only get slight nausea from time to time, nothing major. :)

And every time you need a new box, the nurse takes a record of your weight and your blood pressure (which mine has no changes so far)

But to be honest, since I've been on the Pill, my skin has cleared up by a LOT!

Anyways, if you decide by the Pill, and you get various side effects from one, there's nothing stopping you from trying a different type of pill, right?

I wouldn't rely on only condoms, as they can rip cause of women's nails and such.

Well, for me, the pill I'm on is working great.

Good luck finding a contraceptive that suits you.

TasteofIndia agony auntI have used the Pill before and it was fine, but not great. Some side effects (weight, libido, etc.)... probably not my favorite, but it did the trick and none of the side effects were too awful. I did try the Nuva Ring and all though it took some getting used to - I really liked it! Nuva Ring gets my vote!

A female reader, DrPsych United Kingdom +, writes (30 June 2008):

DrPsych agony auntThe most reliable method of contraception is not having sex. Other methods are never fail-safe but there are lots of different types of pills and physical aids that can be used to reduce the chances of pregnancy. However, before you think about one of the many contraceptive pills on offer it would be wise to get a basic health check at your doctor's surgery. Some pills are not suitable for people with certain conditions and you need some basic education on how to use your chosen method reliably. Congratulations on getting married by the way.

A female reader, lexilou United Kingdom +, writes (30 June 2008):

lexilou agony auntI think its down to the individual and you need to see a nurse or doctor or family planning clinic if you have one.

From personal experience, the pill made me gain weight and made me very nasty, but that was 20 years ago so there are probably lots of new ones out now. The coil made me have 10 day heavy periods when I normally only have 2-3 very light periods. My friends who had the pill injection struggled to conceive afterwards but other women have no problems at all. There is one coil that has hormones present which Im told is good, I cant have it as I was a smoker and am over 35, but some of my friends had it and said they didnt have the heavy period you get from the normal coil. one or two even stopped having periods. I know nothing about diaphragms and a lot or people dont like condoms!! As I say its personal choice x

A female reader, SugarCookie United States +, writes (30 June 2008):

I myself am also on the depo. I never decided to try the pill because my sister-in-laws friend got pregnant with ferternal twins while on it. The side effects of the shot are no periods, except a little spotting sometimes when the shot is due, sore breast, headaches, and weight gain. I always get all the side effects but they aren't bad enough to quit. I have been on it for 3 1/2 years and have never gotten pregnant even though I have sex with my fiance without a condom for 3 years. That is the only one I can advise. I tried to get on the IUC but my uterus was to small since I had never been pregnant.

A female reader, Tisha-1 United States +, writes (30 June 2008):

Tisha-1 agony auntThe best thing you can do is go see your gynecologist and discuss all the options available to you. Your individual health and risk factors need to be discussed with her (or him) so that you can decide what will work best for you. There are many options out there beyond the pill, and indeed there are many formulations of the pill, so your best bet is to ask your doctor.

Congratulations on the wedding!

A female reader, emj United Kingdom +, writes (30 June 2008):

emj agony auntwell being some-one who has tried everything possible for conteception i felt obliged to anserw lol , i firstly started to take the pill which i found difficult with rembering but the only really bad side effects i found with these is if you forget once you are very likely to get pregnant and is not advised to take for a long time as it causes blood thining , I also treid the rod which i found to be ok didnt have anyside effects but unfortunatly mine got infected which put me off but this is very rare , i then had the coil which i would not recommend i found number of complaints on a few website of discomfort and pain which i sufferd for 7 months before taking out , I am at the moment having the depo injections which yes make me put on weight not loadz but a little but cover me completely and is harder to get pregnant straight after when used for a long period of time , I have just recently been adviced from my dr of a patch that has just come out which geos on your arm and is replaced every week for 3 weeks of a month and the other week is obviuosly for your period which sounds great, but ill let you know how it geos as im going to try them next! lol , the injection did stop my periods all together the coil i was on all the time an the rod very simaler to the injection the pill is quite regular and lieght , so i hope this has helped you but every person reacts in different ways to different types of contrception you should ask your dr which would suit you best :) good luckx
