I'm not too sure about anyone else, but with me, the more time I spend with the girl in question, the more I begin to wonder what being romantically involved with her would be like.

I can answer this as I fell in love with my best girl friend. Something either happens to make you realise what your life would be like if they were not around (i.e. they move away / date someone else so do not see you as much) or secondly I dated someone else and realised no other girl compares to what I initially thought was someone I was just "close friends with". Physical attraction came into it in my case but I think that grows from the amount of time you spend with someone. A level of comfortability, being able to sit in the same room and not say anything to each other with no awkwardness. He might start doing things for you, little presents etc and maybe holding hands etc, that kind of thing. Basically being different to you than he is with other female friends.
