writes:Hello.I have a 10-year-old son, and he thinks that as soon as a girl his age hugs him, it automatically means she's attracted to him. However, my wife and I are trying to explain the different types of hugging, as sometimes, he calls any woman that hugs me at a party "Dad's girlfriend". However, my wife and I both know it isn't true, and we treat such comments as cute jokes. However, he is growing up, and, well, we don't want him to have that mindset for the rest of his life.It was cute, when my son first started it. However, it's getting a bit embarassing.What kind of hugging from a woman WOULD mean: attraction, and what kind means just friendliness?-Bruce. Reply to this Question

 when I hug friends I only hug with shoulders and upper body, my hips, belly, etc are kept at a slight distance.. a HUG that presses pelvis to pelvis is more than friends...

And, it's been a few times he's been caught harassing fellow female students, just because they all hugged him. Are there any kinds of hugs you can tell me about, so my wife and I may demonstrate in front of him? For example, we'd point out "Ok. THIS kind of hug is the kind that is for couples.", and "Oh. This is just the friendly kind of hug!", and we'd do that for each of the 2.
Please? I want to help my son out, a lot. But, first, I want him to be able to learn the different types of hugs. My wife and I will point out the obvious, once we know how.
He's a smart boy. And, I don't want him to turn out to be a sexual harasser.

Your son sound like he's getting to the stage where he's starting to notice girls & relationships.
You should just sit him down & explain to him that a "hug" is a friendly playful gesture between friends & it doesn't always mean attraction.

reader, anonymous, writes (3 April 2012): If its a lengthy hug, if she pulls him in a little bit closer part way through it. Perhapes if she says things like your tall or i like your hair, showing shes noticing physical appearance.
Friendship hugs are short usually(unless say its a comforting hug through a hard time) with maybe a friendly tap on the back.

Full frontal embrace with one persons arms locked around the neck and the other persons arms locked around the waist is a romantic/flirty/intimate hug. A one arm hug is generally reserved for friends and family except female may sometimes embrace other females for comfort. Any hug that last longer than three seconds may also be romantic. There really isn't a rule of thumb for hugging that females use and sometimes it may confused u. Answers on this will vary.
