A female reader, chigirl Norway +, writes (18 November 2012):

chigirl agony auntI think it's like when people say I look like my mother. They don't mean to say I look twice my age, you know. We aren't the same heigh, don't have the same haircolour, don't have the same body (she's given birth to two children after all). What they mean is we have similar features, the same type of nose and eyes and cheekbones for example.

Like others have said, probably the only resemblance between you and Amy is the hair and the glasses, but that's enough for them to draw the comparison. Doesn't mean you are identical to Amy, just that you have some of the same features (although glasses can hardly be called a feature).

I was compared to Susan Sarandon for quite a few years. She is a beatifull woman, nothing wrong with that but the fact that she is 25 years older than me offended me. But then I realized that people don't think about these facts. They find one feature that is obvious and that's all.

A female reader, peteloevely United Kingdom +, writes (16 November 2012):

peteloevely agony auntthat does not necessarily mean you look exactly like her, but rather that your style reminds them of her... everyone says my best friend looks like brad pit... and he takes it as a complement, and in a way i think he does, but nowhere near as attractive... it's his mannerism that reminds us all of him, but the level of attractiveness mmh not so much!

my mum is got dreads and people tell her she looks like woopi Goldberg I mean come ofe… they are not even the same race… lool

If you're happy with the way you look, ignore what others say. If you're NOT happy, change it...

Personally, I don't know the character you're talking about, but "good looking" is subjective - everyone's ideas are so different.

I think I'm a bit tubby, but others have called me CHUNKY. I think my bits of grey hair make me look old, but others have said they are SUAVE.

And a friend of mine was going on about how his gf was the sexiest, most divine woman ever... I thought she was very average but had a lovely smile and was great conversation!

Don't take it to heart :)

I've been told that I look like a llama, and I've also been called 'sir.'

Why not try different styles with your hair? Maybe have a stylist layer it to give it some bounce, or maybe try using curlers to mix things up a bit.

A reader, anonymous, writes (15 November 2012):

Honestly I would take it as a complement! Why be offended over this? Amy (as her character) is witty, funny, smart, has a great heart, is loyal, open and honest. All features that are hard to find in just 1 person. The episode I saw the other night she went to a wedding with Lenard and she looked pretty!

She is pretty in real life too and she also holds a PhD! So to be honest for you to be offended by this is an insult to her! You must either think very highly of yourself (I take this from your comment, I don't think I look as ugly as her) if you are half as pretty as she is you would be thanking people for such a great compliment. Don't be offended by being told you look like Amy from The Big Bang Theory.

A female reader, Staceily United States +, writes (15 November 2012):

Staceily agony auntEven if she is pretty in real life what does that matter? They are comparing her to the character, the one who doesn't look pretty. When I was younger I was compared to Hannah Montana. The character, not Miley Cyrus. It pissed me off at the time, I was 19 and compared to a young girl. Later I realized they weren't comparing me exactly, like I wasn't a twin of the girl, but we had a similar build and hair style with bangs. You aren't identical to Amy, you have similar hair and glasses so that's what they say. It doesn't mean you are ugly by any means, they are just taking some similarities and making a comparison.

Its a good point what chigirl said too, she plays a certain character in big bang theory, so the makeup department for the show have purposely made her look that way to fit the part.

Just look at America Ferrera from ugly betty, she's beautiful in real life but she's made to look like an ugly geek in that show.

chigirl agony auntBtw, I saw "Sheldon" in a British costume drama not too long ago... It was hilarious, but he really is good looking as well. It's all in the acting, and he's a good actor.

A female reader, chigirl Norway +, writes (15 November 2012):

chigirl agony auntAmy from Big Bang theory is actually pretty. Uhm, they just make her hunch over and have a frown on her face, and they have make-up on her to not enhance any female features, lol.

But if you saw the episode where she and Leonard went to a wedding she shows a glimpse of how she can actually look (the same at the wedding of Howard and Bernadette).

The real life woman who plays Amy is pretty. It's mainly her clothing style in the series, and her way of walking, that is meant to portray her as less pretty. In the show she's not working what she's got... but she's got it.

it's not what's wrong with people, it's what's wrong with you, you're insecure, when I started to accept the fact that I won't find everybody beautiful, everybody won't find me beautiful and that I'm much more than my looks, gee my life's improved, learn not to give a ... Besides Malin is NOT ugly and she's PhD in real life ! she's smart and pretty, so when your friends say you look like her, you say Oh you mean smart and pretty, thanks!

there are a total of SEVEN facial types... so we all look like someone...

some folks think my husband looks like Tom Cruise. He does not IMO but I'll let him think he does....

A reader, anonymous, writes (15 November 2012):

They may not mean you look like her as in an ugly way, they may just mean you resemble her because of similar hair style and colour and that you wear glasses, not in facial features. They'll grow out of it as you all get older and you change your appearance as people do, so I would just roll my eyes and let it go over my head.

I take it this winds you up though? So they may also milk it a bit to get a reaction out of you because of this.
