A female United States age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Okay. I'm 13 years old, and I started my period when I was 12. A few months ago, I noticed a strange, clumpy, whit substance in my panties. I wasn't aware of it until I saw it, and it is sometimes accompanied by a thick, whitish liquid. I'm embarrassed to say anything, and I can't exactly ask my doctor, since I have no way of getting to one without explaining this to my mother (who I do not get along with, and who is defnately not a good parent. at all.). I can't bring myself to say anything, but I'm afraid something may be wrong. I am a virgin, and I never feel anything when these substances come out of me. However, sometimes my pantied get wet, and it's extremely embarrassing to live with.

What should I do?

The discharge is almost certainly normal. It's like a natural douche, which washes everything out and keeps it moist and flexible. You’ll find it changes a little though your monthly cycle, getting thicker and stretchier through the midpoint.

All women have this, and there’s nothing dirty or unclean about it. Just remember to change your underpants everyday. And enjoy being a girl. :D

YummyMummy agony auntIs there not an older female you can chat to about this? I know you siad you don't get along with you mum. Have you got any sisters.

It is completely normal to have a discharge. Its your girly bits cleaning its self.

If this still concerns you go see your doctor. You don't have to tell your mum why you are going.

A female reader, mcbirdie United Kingdom +, writes (21 June 2007):

mcbirdie agony auntUnless your discharge also has a smell to it, or ever goes from white/clear to yellow/grey/green, you should be fine--your discharge will change as you go through your cycle. So while you may always have a clear discharge, you may find that on the days when you're ovulating that it becomes a thicker, more white discharge. Keep an eye on it and see if you notice that it changes on a cycle--if it does, you have nothing to worry about.

However, if your discharge is associated with a strong or unpleasant smell, or if you have burning or itching, then you need to go get it checked out. In fact, it sounds like you need to have a quick talk with a doctor anyway--all women need to start having their checkups once their period starts.

Talk to your mother about an appointment. If she resists, or you find it too terribly hard, talk to your school nurse. She can explain about which discharges are normal and also refer you on to a planned parenthood clinic that can see you without a parent.

Best of luck.
