I had a very tough hymen which was like a ring... I could manage a tampon without breaking it so I think it's possible you may have one. But some girls aren't born without one, so don't worry.

A female reader, mcbirdie United Kingdom +, writes (21 June 2007):

mcbirdie agony auntIt is actually pretty rare to find a hymen still intact in a girl your age, who is active at all. Not all girls have them and most are thin enough that they get broken through riding, normal activities, or using tampons.

It is possible that girls who have a stronger, more flexible hymen can have them even through the activity--some have even been reported to remain intact after using tampons--but they're more rare.

If you're having normal periods and are active, I would guess that you no longer have one. You can check yourself by reaching your finger in as far as it will go--you'll feel a resistent layer of tissue if it's still there. Otherwise, you can ask your doctor to have a quick look.

It is worth noting, however, that discomfort the first time you have sex is likely to occur even if the hymen is gone. The breaking of the hymen will give you a sharp pain and perhaps some bleeding--but without it, you can still expect some soreness as your body gets used to intercourse. So regardless of the state of your hymen, make sure the first time, you take your time, make sure you're relaxed, and add lubrication if you need it.
