Hi

I missed my period for two weeks so i went and brought 2 pregnancy tests, i took one when i got home, it came up postive really quickly, then i tested the other one the next morning (my first morning urine) and that also came up postive quickly.

i then went to the docs to get a midwive appointment and i have my first appointment next week... im really scared though because what if they test me and im not even pregnant? can it be that i just had a 2 false positives, is that likely? when i saw that both my tests were positive i was so happy, even my boyfriend is so happy and excited, he's even coming to the first appointment with me next week, but if it turns out im not pregnant i will feel like i have let him down. i dont know why but i worry about alot so thats why im worried about this, because we want this baby more than anything! any advice?

hi, student midwife here again (i commented earlier)

at your first midwife appointment the midwife will take down all your details (medical history, family history, height, weight etc.) they will also ask you the first date of your last period. By this they will be able to hazard a guess at how far pregnant you are and give you an estimated delivery date. But you will have to wait until your 12 week scan to have a more accurate view on how many weeks you are pregnant (all fetus's grow at the same rate in the first 12 weeks so they will be able to measure how long the baby is and give you a very accurate result of your due date)

hope this helps. if you want to know anything else then just ask! :-) oh and congratulations!! xx

There is always a chance. But look at the facts. You haven't had a period, and two tests have come out positive. Unless you used the worst tests on the market, it is more likely that you're pregnant. If you're not pregnant, then maybe talk to the midwife or the doctor about what you're doing and see what he/she says.

Hiya. I was exactly like you when i fell pregnant. I took 5 tests and thought they were broken when they came back positive ha ha. I believe that you are pregnant as you have took 2 tests. Go to your midwife appointment and they will test you again. I dont think your boyfriend will feel like you've let him down as you didnt make them tests come back positive. Stay strong and i really hope everything goes okay for you both x

if you happen not to be pregnant then the midwives will know what to do - they may send you for further tests just to be sure but with two positive pregnancy tests, i would say they you are up the duff indeedy :)

A female reader, anonymous, writes (13 April 2010):

you are not alone - i took 45 pregnancy tests with all of them coming out postive yet even still i doubted i was really pregnant, i have since had 2 midwife appointments (due amother one tomorrow) and a scan yet still, i keep thinking someone is gonna turn around and tell me it's all not real. And even though i am starting to get a belly (i am five months) I don't think i will believe i am having a baby until baby is placed in my arms. Its okay to worry - natural part of being a woman i say :) And they don't test you at your midwife appointment, they weight you and talk to you for about an hour about your medical history and father's medical history and they may take blood and ask you to pee in a pot - all of which is done to make sure you and baby are healthy. You are only six weeks so they may or may not be able to find a heart beat, don't worry if they can't - you just may be too early to tell.

i know its hard - but try not to worry - everything has a way of working out for the best so believe this situation will too :)

False negatives are fairly common. False positives are uncommon. Two false positives in a row is very, very unlikely. Congratulations.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (13 April 2010):

You really can't get 2 false positives. Home Pregnancy Tests test HCG levels in your urine, a hormone released by the body during pregnancy. If the tests come back as positive and your period is late, the doctor will not even test you at your appointment as the tests they use are the exact same as the 2 you have already taken. Trust this information, I've gone through the same thing in the last few weeks and I'm now 11 weeks pregnant! Congrats!x

I would buy the champagne if I were you, but don't open it until after you've seen the midwife.

I believe the tests test for a certain hormone that the female's body releases when she is pregnant - but I'm not sure about that...

It's possible but highly unlikely that they'd be wrong twice.

It is however minutely possible to have two false positives and there is a very small chance that it might be because one has what is known as a "false pregnancy". Basically your body reacts in every way like you are pregnant but you aren't.

Congratulations if you are pregnant, which I would guess you are. But let us know after you've seen the midwife.

If you aren't pregnant its not your fault - and to have missed your period & have two tests tell you that you're pregnant and after all that you're not pregnant? Means that there might be a problem. Again - I **do** think that you are pregnant, but there are a small number of cases where they've been wrong because of these "false pregnancies" - but it would NOT be your fault at all.

Remember the power of positive thinking and positive belief - send the happy thoughts in the direction of your womb and stay positive:)

A female reader, anonymous, writes (13 April 2010):

i am training to be a midwife (in my final year) and as far as im aware you dont get false positive results.

pregnancy tests detect a hormone in your urine called Hcg (human chorionic gonadatrophin. this is the hormone that is produced when the embryo (early developing cells) implants into your uterus and forms the placenta and things. Therefore, if the test shows that you have presence of Hcg then you are pregnant.

so please stop worrying. Just sit tight and wait for your 12 weeks scan to 100% confirm the pregnancy and put your mind at rest.

if you need anymore advice about anything then please write again, il help if i can! x

IHateWomanBeaters agony auntHA no no.

Two false positives are very rare.

Mainly it is two negatives that you will get.

If you aren't pregnant, then I like woman beaters.

aka

Its not going to be a real negative.

hpoco agony auntMaybe you are worried because your body hasn't changed much yet? Early on in the pregnancy you don't necessarily see changes. This fear you are having isn't rational. Two positive tests means you are pregnant. Proceed as normal!

Honeygirl agony auntHun, if you have already done 2tests chances are you are pregnant. Congratulations!!

I thinks its normal to wonder about it - because you probably dont feel any different - maybe just got sore breasts????

What your dr will do is give you final confirmation that you are pregnant and give you a birth date.
