or was he perhaps referring to emotional strength?
I think you needed to ask him "what do you mean by that?" of course now the moment is gone and you have to go back and preface it with:
"you know the other day when you said you like it when I'm strong, what exactly did you mean by that?"

reader, anonymous, writes (28 November 2011): It depends on the situation you were talking about perhaps he means you are strong emotionally and likes that about you, or perhaps he has had a girlfriend who was needy and he likes your strength or character to be independent, or you were lifting something heavy and he likes strong girls! : ) only joking obviously about the last one!
I can only see it as a compliment but how he meant it is hard to decipher as what you were talking about leading up to him saying it would make a difference. You could just ask what he means and say "so the other night you said I was strong, but I was wondering what that meant?" he shouldn't mind! : )
