My girlfriend and I haven't been together that long, and we do not live with each other, but I just wanted to see if we matched other people's definition of what "mature" was, it was an argument we needed to settle. We are a silly couple.

reader, anonymous, writes (30 January 2009): You know the definition of that is different based on the people involved, but I would tend to agree with the first answer....you have to ask if you want clarification from the person or persons who said that.
To me a mature relationship means that they are having sex, they are exclusive, they have mutual respect and they are commited to be exclusive and have an eye to the future..they have some common goals and a plan to spend their lives together.

It could mean they've been together a long time, but not necessarily. I'd say it means that they're a) dating exclusively, b) have talked about the future and c) have at least tentative plans to spend it together.
