Aunty Susie agony auntYou could try getting a spray tan, the tanned look appears thinner. Get a pair of long board shorts, there are knee length ones. And a bikini top. And have fun!

Abella agony auntyou need your legs free to enjoy swimming. But if your legs, in your opinion, appear larger, then a light long sarong can matching your swimsuit can be wrapped elegantly around your middle. Then when you want to enter the water quickly discard the sarong and leave it beside your towel and walk into the pool.

Do the same when you get out of the pool - go straight to your sarong and put it on even before you wrap a towel around your shoulders.

If you have a lap pool near your home then 100 laps each of backstroke and breast stroke three times a week will do wonders to whittle down and tone those legs. Or if you have or can hire or borrow a treadmill then a half hour daily on that will also help. Position the treadmill so you can watch the early morning news while you walk the treadmill.

You will feel a million dollars if you can tone up your leg muscles like this.

Best wishes

A female reader, CindyCares Italy +, writes (22 May 2011):

CindyCares agony aunt For lounging poolside you could wear a pareo, or a sarong, you know, those long wraparound skirts that you can tie in many different ways , they look so pretty.

But ... do you actually think of entering in the pool all dressed and swimming with clothing on ?... Ow come on, not only you'd look conspicuous and you'd draw attention on you more than with a normal swimsuit, but it's also uncomfortable ,antihygienic and dangerous. How huge your legs can be ? I'd bet it's all in your head and you look NOTHING like an abnormality. And after all, you are not going to a beauty contest, you are going to be with friends, have fun and get some exercise . So just choose a nice swimswuit that can compliment a more robust figure, say, one piece black with deep v-shaped cleavage , wear your wraparound when you are out of the water if you wish, but inside the pool , just...relax and have fun.

A male reader, Odds United States +, writes (22 May 2011):

Odds agony auntShort term: just wear a normal swimsuit, one or two piece. The long stuff won't hide the size or shape of your legs, it will only draw attention to the fact that you're self-concious about them, while discouraging you from swimming. Just be proud of what you have and enjoy the pool.

Long term: If you're worried about your legs, or the rest of yourself, get into better shape. Obviously I can't tell what you look like, but unless you're already stick-thin and just irrationally hating yourself, a healthy diet and exercise program would do you good anyway - if for no other reason than boosting your self-confidence.
