A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Girls only please!

My boyfriend and I are planning to have sex for the first time next month. I'm a little nervous, but excited.

The only thing knocking my confidence is my shaving. I used shaving foam and new razors, and moisturizer afterwards, but there are still spots/cuts. It doesn’t look nice. What can I do to get rid of them?

Thanks.

I used to get REALLY bad razor burn and ingrown hairs down there and on my inner thighs after shaving. The best advice i ever got was to use an exfoliating acne scrub right after shaving. I like st. Ives apricot scrub. Just don't scrub too hard with it.

FloridaCatGirl agony auntI've read that it helps to clean the area with an antibacterial soap first. Then use shaving cream for sensitive skin. Hope this helps!

chigirl agony auntOh yes, I never use shaving foam as it irritates the skin, I only use warm water and do it while in the shower or shortly after a shower. Then for moisturizer I like to use baby oil as it is perfume free and good for the sensitive skin. You should be extra careful around the openings, to not get any oils or lotions too close as it could irritate you horribly. You don't want the moisturizer on your openings, just on the skin around.

Also be careful to not bring bacteria from the anus up to the vagina. It can give you infections. Use hot water on the razor to rinse it well between each time you shave off some hairs. So, shave, rinse, shave, rinse and so on. Make sure all the hairs are gone after you are done too, by rinsing both the razor and yourself. Don't use hot water on yourself though, only body temperature or a little colder water. If you have some small loose hairs left behind on your skin they will cause irritation.

chigirl agony auntYou need to let your hair grow back out Im afraid. The only way to prevent that from happening is to not let it happen in the first place. If that happens every time you shave then there's little you can do. Try not to shave at all but cut it short with a scissor instead, just trimming it down. Or you can try and do what I find more comfortable, not shaving the entire area but shaving around the main bush to make it look tidier. But then leaving the hair where the skin is most sensitive. A friend of mine also found it helpful if she left the Brazillian-strip on, and not take everything.

I also found that if you let the hair grow a while, and then shave after a shower, it will go smoother. Shaving often will only lead to rashes and being red, cutting etc.

When you get to know how your skin reacts to different things it will be easier to prevent the cuts and redness and ingrown hairs. It varies a lot from person to person. The typical thing to do though is to shave with the hairs, not against their natural direction. Then shave sideways of the way they grow for a smoother feel, but never against their natural direction. It might not get baby-smooth, but if you want it silky smooth go get a wax instead.

dirtball agony auntJust because you said girls only, I have to pipe in with the guy's side. He'll appreciate the effort, even if it's not perfect. Please don't worry about it too much. He'll be nervous too, so he likely won't even notice.

I'm sure some of the lovely ladies here can help you with your question though.

A female reader, fi_the_tree United Kingdom +, writes (14 February 2011):

fi_the_tree agony auntI get this if i shave often. If you are talking about shaving your pubic hair, then leave it to grow out for a little while (a few weeks) then shave using foam. The shorter the hair is, the more irritation is caused. Also, when moisturizing afterwards, use one for sensitive skin, this should hopefully reduce the red spots, as the perfumed chemicals in some moisturizers can irritate you.

Hope this helps :)
