I think your relationship before your relationship matters.
Do you see him at school or work? Just act like you there when you talk. Don't try to reach him for other stuff until a bit later.

 Depends on what terms.
If it was a joint decision, then give each other a bit of space for a few weeks.
If you broke up with him, give him space, guys take a while to get over a girl.
If he broke up with you, also give him space or he will feel u still like him and things would be awkward.
But generaly, once people break up its never the way it was :/
