 If he is much larger than your previous boyfriend you definitely need to slowly work up to anal sex. Using fingers or even small sex toys that are designed specifically for it.
Never just go for it though, you could do yourself some serious damage. Also, you should talk to him about your concerns, as if you're nervous while doing it, again, you could cause yourself damage by being unable to relax completely.
As for the "mess" you mentioned, it's normal if you don't do anything in preparation. You could try giving yourself an enema beforehand, something a lot of couples who regularly have anal sex try. Another thing to remember is NOT to go to the toilet immediately before in the hope you'll be "cleaner", as this can usually make it worse.
