A female reader, anonymous, writes (10 December 2010):

I worked at a firtility clinic, whenever we advised people to abstain from sex was 1: To prevent fertilisation of a ripe ovum. It sounds contrary to what you are trying to do but a higher amount of follicles are being stimulated than would in a natural cycle and you would have a higher risk of multiples.(And more rationales which i will not elaborat on) Plus it would make harvesting the follicles impossible if you are pregnant. 2: The male would have to abstain because they want to get a optimal sperm sample, masturbation would get rid of all the mature strong sperm and leave you with a sample that is quite immature and have possible a low spermcount. The period for abstainance for a male was usually no longer than a week though. Those are possible reasons for abstaining. Your doc may have different reasons for your case. As I do not know exactly what medication you are taking I would advise you to just call your doctor and ask for more info.

tennisstar88 agony auntYour husband hates sex but yet you guys are trying to conceive? That makes no sense. What is the name of the drug you're taking? Generally when your gyno gives you those fertility drugs you have to follow the strict regimen that goes with them. So like aunt honesty said I wouldn't chance it by masturbating and waste the drug. They're not cheap and you can only be on these fertility pills for a certain period of time, usually 6 months. If that doesn't work then you have to move on to more expensive fertility treatments.

If you're that concerned and can't control your urge, then you need to call your doctor and ask if masturbating is still permitted while taking this drug.

A male reader, dirtball United States +, writes (10 December 2010):

dirtball agony auntI would recommend that you give your doctor a call. Orgasms cause the release of different hormones. Depending on the treatment you're doing, masturbation could cause problems. I would recommend abstaining until you verify with your physician that it will not cause problems.

After all, treatments like this usually aren't cheap. Isn't it worth 12 days of being horny to get the baby you're trying for?

A female reader, aunt honesty Ireland +, writes (10 December 2010):

aunt honesty agony auntI doubt that masterbation would interefere with the medication but if i were you i wouldnt chance it just to be on the safe side. Its only twelve days am sure you can survive without masterbating, i understand that you are sexually frustrated but it will be worth holding out for those twelve days if it gives you more of a chance to have a baby.
