A male United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

My g/f broke up with me last week. Now let me explain how our relationship was. We have been dating for about 19 months and it was the best time of my life. About 5 months ago we decided to move in together. Shortly after that she never seemed like the same person. She would always get mad at me over little things and hardly ever wanted to have sex. She has always been a very stressful person, like if she stops being busy she gets really depressed. She has always been like this, I always wanted her to see a doctor because things like ADD and depression run in her family.

At about the same time as we moved in, I recently got a new job where I was making at least 4 times as much as i was before and she also got a new job. I am also taking a few classes at the university to finish off my degree. I feel that her being away from home, and me working full time plus classes, and also the added bills involved and chores that she hit the ceiling. We also gained weight which was definetly another factor.Shes home alone alot because she has 4 days a week off from work.

As of now we are still living together because both of our names are on the lease. One of us can't really leave because we couldnt handle the rent on our own.

She said she just wants to be friends. I dont understand how after almost 2 years someone can just wake up and say that. I really want her back, and I've tried talking to her but she just starts crying so I stop. She says that once she makes a decision she almost never changes her mind and needs some time. For the past week we have been friendly to each other and still do things together but I'm not sure how much longer I can deal with this.

Yesterday she found out how much she really weighs and was ready to cry. I tried telling her that is one of the reasons we have been so depressed lately and if we fix it she will be the person she used to be, but she just kept saying she couldnt be fixed and this is how she really is and the old her was just a fake. Any ideas on what to do?

It does sound like she's suffering from severe depression. You can only be there for her. Just be a great friend and reassure her that she's loved.

Great title heh. She didn't get fat. She was 115lbs and is now like 128lbs. Problems do run in her family. Her dad has ADD and her 11 year old sister goes to a psychiatrist every week or so because she has a habit of cutting herself and being very antisocial.

I would love to get her help but she doesn't have insurance and doesn't have the money to see a doctor.

She won't be anything like she used to. She needs proffessional counselling. There is something serious going on here that she has become like this. If there is depression in her family, then she might be going through a hell of a bad time. She needs to speak to someone. Be there for her, but don't think she can just be fixed. This will take time. She needs to understand why she feels this way. There's something, so if you can help her find it , that's great. But she sounds like she needs a counsellor.
