As an experiment I'm going to do a massively eccentric over the top wink the next time I'm in a shop and receiving my change from the cashier. I'll keep you posted.

i think that only you can decide if it was honest or not. flirting only works if the other person recognises it. if you did recognise this as flirting chances are that it was. Go with your gut instinct. Take care xx

Exactly martini!

What a world we live in that any thing even slightly questionable equates to sexual inappropriateness.

Helen1986 agony auntI can imagine that he was just having a laugh. He probably wants to be a cool teacher and gain respect from his pupils. So he does this by joking with you. He probably didnt realise that you would take it the wrong way. Just forget about it hunny. Unless something like this happens again, then just take him to one side and tell him that you dont feel comfortable with the way he is acting around you. He should see his mistake and stop, if he doesnt then tell the head of your school or another member of staff. But like I said its probably just some harmless fun. Goodluck

A female reader, anonymous, writes (22 August 2006):

winking? i don't know anyone who even uses winking as flirting anymore. i have friends who wink just to be friendly, if that (I'm 24). i wouldn't think anything of it, even if he did it again (and again, and again). the only time that winking would be inappropriate is if it was coupled with something else - like him "accidentally" touching you and winking or something along those lines. he just sounds like he's being a regular friendly guy.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (22 August 2006):

Nah! I imagine hes old and remembers the days when he could call boys Sonny Boy and ruffle their hair and complement girls on how pretty they looked and give them a friendly "uncley" wink without being assumed to be a paedophile.

I may be wrong!

But my guess is hes just trying to be nice.

bonym agony auntWell I am incined to try and see the good in most things and it could really be very innocent, I mean he only winked, he never touched you did he? Winking has been taken to mean something suggestive but really a wink is just a way of showing some kind of humerous affection, not lustful desire etc. I think its innocent. But then again, its hard to say either way. xxx

It could have been innocent. It could have not been.

I say if this is a repeat incident...then it is time to become concerned.

Are you two super sensitive that a wink can cost a guy his job? [sigh] Unless he's made a pass at you, there is no way this is inappropriate.
