i'd definitely say go for it, once a tampon is in properly you can't really feel it so it is much more comfortable than a pad. You will definitely need an applicator tampon (most of them are) as non applicator ones are hard to get right. When you put it in it feels like its going in a long way, but that is how it is meant to be!.

Tampons aren't really all that comfortable the first time you use them, usually because you're not sure how far it goes or how big the tampon should be etc. If you want to be comfortable, I would recommend pad. But if you want to try a tampon, try it out the day before. Practice putting a tampon in, sitting, walking. Remember not to have it in too long though! Don't want toxic shock syndrome. And if you decide to go with the tampon, the idea about wearing a thin pad underneath is an excellent one; it'll give you peace of mind about leaks.

There's a first time for everything, and if no one ever worn tampons unless they've used them before then no one would ever wear tampons.
But do yourself a favour and try one out a day BEFORE you go to this thing. And try the smallest tampon first. Be sure to push it up as far as you can get it, for most comfort. The first time I used a tampon I didn't push it up far enough, and it was very uncomfortable the entire day. Read the instructions and it'll tell you how far up it needs to go. Be sure your hands are clean before you insert the tampon. If you have long nails then make sure they're clean and be careful so you wont scratch yourself.
For the first day wearing a tampon, if you use the smallest one, you should also wear a thin pad as you might leak. If it leaks, you need a tampon for heavier bleeding. But start with the smallest one to see what you need.

Sure give it a try! Get normal absorbency with a nice plastic applicator (they're more expensive but easier to use for your first time) and practice a few times (like starting ASAP) to make sure you have it down before your spring fling.
