I was wondering if there is any one out there who has/is breastfeeding, but by only using a breast-pump. In other words, you don't actually "breast-feed", but you do use your breast milk for your baby. I was just wondering, because I don't know how I will get the time to sit down with my baby and breast-feed between work and my schooling. I know I get 6 weeks of medical leave, but I want to go longer than that for my breast-feeding.Any advice or experience is much appreciated! Reply to this Question Share |

At 2 weeks I started pumping in the morning, afternoon ,evening then again at midnight. Then when I went back to school I breast feed him in the morning as soon as we got up (5am) then again at 8:45,before leaving for school. I pumped at lunch, (you will need to pump during one of your breaks during the day just to keep your breast milk up.) Then I feed him as soon as i walked in the house. I literally would be undoing my bra as I picked him up lol. Then all my evening and night feedings were all breast. I did this for 19 months before he self wheened himself. Which was the hardest part for me because I wasn't ready for the experience to stop.

Hi sweetheart
Well if you can get on with a breast pump then there is no reason why you shouldn't use one, your breast milk has such fantastic qualities in it that it will give your baby such a good start, I was only able to feed my daughter for 3 weeks and because she had an undeveloped palate (this was not discovered until she was much older), she could not suckle very well and got very frustrated when I did try to breast feed her. I ended up having to go to bottle milk after she was 3 weeks old but she had a good start from me.
My problems weren't helped by faulty commercial style loan breast pumps that ended up making me incredibly sore and unable to continue.
You can freeze your milk in special bags etc.
You could gradually just feed your baby yourself for her last feed eventually as you try to wean him/her off the breast milk when you have had enough. It is nice to have the bond aspect but if you don't have the time to sit down and do it then expressing your milk is the next best option.
BTW keep a tin of milk in the house which is as near to breast milk as possible as this is a fantastic top up method if you need it, as you could find that being busy may affect the amount of breast milk you produce so don't put yourself under too much pressure OK, keep it as a way of emergency if you want.
Keep us posted eh!
