Two cultures...one wedding! How do we do this?

A female United States age 36-40, anonymous writes:

My fiance and I have been together for six years and five months today. We're actually getting married in exactly seven months but we STILL have not compromised on a theme to the wedding. He's Mexican-American and I'm Irish-American and we want to integrate aspects of both our cultures into the wedding but we're not entirely sure how to do that.

Any suggestions?

Emilysanswers-"Bog Standard"?!...what is that suppose to mean?

Anyway..being Irish myself,Irish weddings are no different from any other weddings to be honest...We celebrate by Irish dancing...Guinness...we just go all out and have a good time...thats what weddings are for..just sit down have a chat about the wedding...take one thing from the Irish and Mexican culture...e.g..it could be mexican food..or Irish dancing...

TasteofIndia agony auntBaseball, coca cola and guns... Emily, you kill me!!! All though, can't say that I haven't drank some Coca Cola at a baseball game while shooting at targets.

Anyhow, there are plenty of ways to incorporate both of your cultures into one special day. Just remember to think to yourself, "tradition be damned!" and just do whatever you want... it's your day and you can pretty much do as you please. Hire a wedding planner if you want to make it easier on yourself, but if not, you can definitely be creative and do a nice meld. So don't get your mind stuck in what "should be" or "ought to be" or what other people have done. You can have a little of this, a little of that and make the theme YOU GUYS. It's a celebration of your love and that's what everyone is excited about!!

However, I do think Guinness flavored tequila is a must. Absolutely.

A female reader, Emilysanswers United Kingdom +, writes (9 August 2009):

Well you are both American, so it can't be that hard.

As far as I know, Irish weddings are just pretty much bog standard church affairs and then a MASSIVE piss up afterwards. Like a Scottish wedding but without the dancing.

Why not have a very American wedding with American things like baseball and cokacola and, um, guns? Sorry I don't know much about America.

So anyway, how to do it:

Sit down together one afternoon with a notepad on a big table.

Then make a list of all the things that he HAS to have at his wedding, from the cars through the church, the reception and everything else.

Next you make a big list of all the things you HAS to have at your wedding.

You'll probably find there are a lot of things that you can agree on, and then you can debate the individual issues over each little thing as you go.

You don't need one over all theme. The theme is YOU AND HIM. Just have a big mash up of everything you both want. Guiness flavoured Tequilla.

Good Luck!! xx
