A female United Kingdom age 30-35, anonymous writes:

Help me! I know discharge is normal but I get SO MUCH. I'm not sure if it's right. I have to put loo roll in my knickers all the time its awful. When i wake up, and then stand up, its realy heavy, as if its been 'collecting' overnight.

I hate it because my pants are sodden! It doesn't smell unpleasent, but i'm sure this isn't normal. Everywhere I search on the web it says visit a doctor, but I really can't tell my mum!

Maybe there is a clinic I can go anonamously? Or if you know of any medicine I can get from a pharmacy or something please tell me :) Thanks!

brooke5426 agony auntI think its just normal for you. I mean if there is no itchiness/smell from it its unlikely to be an infection and if its varying depending on the time of the month it sounds like what we all get, but just a little bit heavier. Its probably a hormonal thing which will balance itself out as you get older and you'll find it gets lighter.

In saying that, I am not a doctor and even if I was I still wouldnt be able to say for sure until I had examined you. Maybe you could ask your dad to take you to the doctor and if he asks whats wrong just say its womens problems. That'll usually be enough information for most men! For a short term solution, you can buy pantyliners from any supermarket/drugstore which are like small sanitary towels made for absorbing discharge.

A female reader, PreciousNY United States +, writes (5 May 2008):

Your discharge seems to be normal but a doctor would be better qualified to answer. I've read on the web that if the discharge is white or clear with no odor it's perfectly normal. I too had a heavy discharge after I got my first period and all through my pubescent years so I don't think you should worry. Some girls have more discharge than others. But you are very young and you should see a gynecologist anyway. Every girl should go when they get their first period. You only need to tell your dad that you've already gotten your first period (right?) and need to go to a gynecologist.

Tisha-1 agony auntOkay, I think I understand why you can't talk with your mum. I'm NOT a medical expert, but this sounds like you're perfectly normal. Again, I'm not in any position to tell you everythings just fine either. So, I think your best stategy is to tell your dad that you think you should be checked out because you're having some irregularities in your cycle. Maybe your periods feel heavier than you think they should be or that you've got a lot of cramping? Your dad won't be able to help with this!! Unless he's a doctor, in which case he'd want to have you seen by a qualified person. Right?

Oh yeah.. white or sometimes clear.. but white if it dries. It depends. And no itching. Infact no discomfort except for it being wet! Forgot about that bit!

Ok..

I am not sexualy active. But I have been fingered. Im pretty sure this started before it.

It does vary in my cycle to the heaviness of it. Its usually quite watery. I realy cant talk to my mum about it, I mean I never see her. I live with my dad and brothers! And im not close to any of them either.

This started quite a while ago. Are you sure there is no medicine or home remedies I can try? There isnt realy a way I could get to a doctors either as I cant drive! Thanks for comments though xx

A female reader, brooke5426 United Kingdom +, writes (5 May 2008):

brooke5426 agony auntIf you really don't want to tell your mum, uou can visit a doctor without telling her, just call up to make an appointment (if there is more than one doctor working at your surgery ask for a female doctor if that would make you more comfortable). Doctors have to respect patient confidentiality so of course they will see you on your own if thats what you want. It could be anything from a yeast infection to an STD if you are sexually active or maybe you just naturally produce more discharge than average. But definitely get it checked out just to put your mind at ease, doctors see these cases all the time so dont be embarrassed.

Take care

Tisha-1 agony auntHi, I really think you might need to consider talking with your mum about this, I know it might be very embarassing but I hope she would want the best for you! If you're concerned because you've been sexually active and you don't want her to find out, well, I understand that... but if you're grown up enough to be sexually active then you need to taking care of things like being sure you understand how to protect yourself against sexually transmitted diseases and unwanted pregnancy.

If you're just embarassed to tell her, then can you talk with another close female relative? It would help us to understand if you told us why you can't talk with her about this. All women have issues similar to yours at one point or another in their lives, so you're not alone!!!

Hi Hunny

This is most definatly not right, The only thing I can think of if you cant go to your doctor hunny which you really should do is a sexual health clinic in your area..This really is not ideal at all, Im wondering why you cant tell your mum sweetheart wouldnt she be concerned about your health? As this would concern me as a mother love..Is this a white discharge? As it could be thrush, Have you had any itching with the discharge? Whatever this is you really should go to see a doctor, The family planning clinic in your area may help if you explain the situation, You really need to sort this out as soon as poss love...TAKE CARE WITH LOVE MANDY XXXXXXXXXXXX

A female reader, :):):) United Kingdom +, writes (5 May 2008):

Excessive discharge is rarely anything to worry about. It varies within your cycle so unless it has been like this for a while try not to worry.

From what you've described it sounds as if you could have an infection.

Doctors in the uk wont see anyone under 16 unless they are accompanied with an adult.

However you could always see a school nurse, who will be happy to see you alone.

If you've been sexually active, this could be the result of an std but its very unlikely. If so you could visit a family planning clinic, who also will see you without an adult.

Good luck
