writes: I just wonder how many aunts and uncles on Dear Cupid have, at some time or another said something to another person - friend, family member, significant other - that you THOUGHT would please them, BUT went over like a lead balloon?! In other words, the person was offended. And then, after apologizing, next time you met or talked with your friend you told a story against yourself of a previous time when you made a faux pas? Maybe on hearing about it, you and your friend had a good laugh, and all was well.I'll start with an example: I sent an IM to a friend that I thought he'd appreciate. He didn't! and I apologized. Apology accepted and we had a good, productive talk. A few days later when chatting on Skype I told him about the time when I was 13 and a lady was visiting my parents. She was wearing a black mink coat......can you guess??.....I, intending it as a compliment remarked that it was a beautiful coat, just like cat's fur (we had a black cat with glossy fur). Well, all heck broke loose! Boy was she ever offended! Looking back, I put it down to being a young teen and not knowing any better.......anyway, I related this story against myself to my friend on Skype and we both had a good laugh. My point is, the value of a little self-deprecating humor in defusing an embarrassing comment.....Would love to hear of your experiences (come now, someone must have done that here at some point in your life, LOL) Reply to this Question Share |
