My dad and I are really close and have decided we want to get tattoos together; he's going to get a design right down his back. I'm not that daring yet and want something smaller. I'm also a bit of a wuss with pain so want to do something small, like a small black scorpion somewhere; to represent my bold personality and the fighter in me. I've already given this a lot of thought and I'm 100% sure I want to do it. I've heard that the fattier the area you get tattood, the less it hurts - is this true? If this is true, what do you think to a small black scorpion just slightly above the bikini line to the side? Any thoughts appreciated!

My main peace of advice is:
EAT SOMETHING FIRST!!!!
if the pain is bad and you're on an empty stomach the chances of you passing out are a lot stronger!!! I do speak from experience.
Take a bottle of water in, it helps to be able to sip water when you need to.
As for boney vs fatty
to be honest, some people feel it the other way around, others say it tickles
for me, outlining is the best, for others it's shading. you wont know until you're actually in the chair and he's started
sorry that that isn't much help but just be calm, relax and enjoy it!!

I have one on my lower stomach on the left side. It didn't hurt too much. In fact I don't even remember it hurting. I went in there expecting the most horrible pain imaginable and it was surprisingly not that bad at all. I have heard the same things you said, that tattoos on fatty areas feel better than directly on the bone but I don't know, I only have the one tattoo for now. Good luck though. It sounds awesome that you are getting a tattoo with your dad.

Hello, I'm 18 years old and I got a tattoo where my shoulder meets my arm. I did notice the vibrating sensation from shading more on the bonier parts of my body. But the pain sensation from outlining felt the same, whether the fatty part of my arm, or the bonier parts of my shoulder. It sounds like you want your tattoo on your hip, there isn't too much fat there so it might hurt a bit. Don't worry though, a tattoo doesn't hurt as much as it appears to. With me, it hurt the first half hour or so, then I got used to it. Outlining does hurt, but shading feels more like a vibrating sensation than pain.If you do start to feel discomfort, talk to your dad or artist to distract you from what's going on. Looking at it doesn't help the pain, look anywhere but the tattoo, because your eyes will tell you you're in pain.Sorry this was so long. I hope everything goes well. Follow you're artist's aftercare instructions and you'll have ink that you can be proud of. : )

I've got tattoos on bony areas and fleshy areas. My personal experience, I flinched more when I got a rose on my stomach above my bikini line. That can make it a bit hard for the artist. I would say ankle and foot area are not nearly as painful as people say, and they look sexier in my opinion.
