 I don't think the age difference is a big problem. However you should meet him with a chaperone. Start out as friends and see how well that goes. Don't allow yourself to get too tied up with boys at this point in your life. Focus on school. Education is important!
My 12 year old granddaughter has had a bf for periods of time. She is only allowed to go anywhere with them when chaperoned. It could be to church, or to a friends birthday party and such. I guess you could call it the puppy love thing. *smiles* Perhaps you could meet and have a date at the skating rink or a local theater. Just be safe and have loads of fun with your parents discretion of course.
By the way my granddaughter is an honor roll student. Without her participation in doing her best in school it's boy's off limits time! *wink*

This is my opinion only,I think the first thing you should do is go out with him as a friend,wait to find out what his intentions are before you start dating him,there is a very big difference between being a close friend, and dating, i am a little concerned now,that you are in middle school and he is in high school, when you first wrote in you said you were 12 and he was thirteen, is this the case or is he a lot older than you have said ?,if he is thirteen then maybe you should stick to being a good friend to him , then when you go into high school and if you are still good friends, then maybe you should start dating, because you are 12 you dont really want to get to deeply involved with boys, being a friend to a boy a year older than yourself is OK, but dating is more complicated and things may happen to you that a girl of your age should not have to go through, please think about what i have said very carefully, dont rush into a situation in which you may get hurt, i am only thinking of your well being, please be careful and stay safe.

I think you should make friends with the 3rd cousin, but lay a few ground rules down, make sure he is only after your friendship and not wanting you to do anything that you do not want him to do,have fun enjoy yourself but do not let your life become too complicated because you are both very young and have all your lives together, be smart,be safe, and good luck.
