Do you think I should be worried that he might be, or was he just feeling insecure because he just lost his job as he worked for a newspaper? Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks for your help.

He is just feeling insecure, simple as that. He lost his job so he will be worried that you will lose interest in him, a lot of men feel they have to be the 'provider' and their self esteem is wrapped up in their ability to provide and look after their partner/family.
So now he has lost his job, chances are he will be feeling like less of a man therefore he will be worried that you will go off him and find a man that can provide, or a man who is successful in the workplace.
Try and reassure him, make extra effort showing how much you love him and all will be fine. Once he gets another job everything will be back to normal.
I hope this helps and good luck!
