Should I spend the money on the "morning after" pill?

A female United States age 41-50, anonymous writes:

My boyfriend and I had sex a few days ago using a condom, but it broke. I started my period on the 21st and we had sex on the 24th while I was still menstruating. I'm worried about pregnancy. I feel like the chances are very low I would be pregnant considering I have a very regular cycle, usually 28 days, so I will probably not ovulate until between the 10th and 14th day of my cycle and right now is only the 5th. I could go get the morning after pill, but it's $60 and I don't really want to spend that if the chances of pregnancy are extremely low. What do you all think? Is the chance that I am pregnant great enough for me to spend the cash? I know this is probably silly, but is there anything I can do to make the "environment" less hospitable to the sperm to reduce my chances of fertilization if I happened to ovulate early? I am a college student so money is tight or I would just go get the morning after pill. Thanks for your advice.

Plan B is effective for up to 72 hours, nightingale. It just becomes less effective as more time passes. So next time, please check your facts before you give "advice."

To the rest of you, thank you very much for your extremely helpful comments. Tomorrow night (Thursday night) will make 72 hours so I will go buy the pill tomorrow morning. I also think I'll try the Vitamic C thing as well, just for some added security. It sounds interesting and is worth a try.

I am in the process of getting birth control, but it's been quite a challenge with no insurance. My mother is a teacher and I am a dependent on her insurance, but they still refuse to pay for birth control for dependents. I actually posted on here before my frustrations dealing with the insurance company. I have an appointment on sept 3 to have a pap and then i will receive birth control the following week. I've decided to abstain from sex until I am on birth control, and my boyfriend supports that. It's just too much of a stress without bc.

Thanks again for all your advice. Really put things into perspective for me.

As a college student, you should probably also know that you can still become pregnant (flukes happen) and you should also know that spending a whole $60 is A LOT cheaper than taking care of a child for 18 years. Go to planned parenthood, let them know you don't make much money and they will give you Plan B, condoms and birth control for free.

aphexinfinite agony auntwell as far as im aware the morning after pill is only succesful during the first 24 hours though can work up to 48 hrs but gets less succesful! if you dont want to be pregnant then go see your gp or a family planning clinic and get a pregnancy test and use it when your about due your periods or if the morning after pill will work. and in future if you dotn want to be in this situation you best see about getting the pill or the rod or something so that this wont happen. good luck aphex

If you had sex more than 72 hours ago, even the morning-after pill is not going to be a surefire way to prevent pregnancy. (Its effectiveness decreases the longer you wait to take it.) If it has been less than 72 hours, go get the pill for your own peace of mind.

Some research also suggests that high doses of Vitamin C may help interrupt the conditions that allow an egg to successfully attach to the uterine lining through interference with the hormone progesterone. There are New Age sites that swear by it and I'm including a link to one so you can read about it for yourself and decide if this is something you want to try.

I can't tell you that it works or will work for you specifically. I can tell you that I have been in a similar situation where a condom broke the day before I was due to ovulate, and I did not have access to the morning-after pill because my bf and I were vacationing in a country where the use of such a pill is frowned upon and therefore not readily available. I thought the Vitamin C thing was probably BS but it was worth a shot for me because I didn't want a pregnancy and didn't have an alternative.

Following the advice of the site I've linked to, I took 6,000 mg a day of Vitamin C for five days in a row. I did not become pregnant. In fact, I got my period the day after I stopped the Vitamin C, even though it wasn't due for another 10 days or so. Maybe I wouldn't have gotten pregnant regardless...I have no idea. But it's an alternative that probably doesn't hurt as long as you don't take high doses of Vitamin C on a long-term basis.

okay

blasically there is always a chance you could be pregnant with unprotected sex

weather it is low or high you might always be preganat

you spend that $60 and you wont have a child

you dont spend that and you might have a child that will cost far more than $60 and will have for the rest of your life. you will probably have to quit college or uni and you might not reach your ambitions.

take the pill

and dont make the same mistake again!

good luck

youll know what is right to do

The morning after pill only works up to 72 hours after the sex so i wouldnt bother tbh, or if youre really bothered then why not split the cost?

Good luck!

A reader, anonymous, writes (26 August 2009):

Sperm can remain live inside the women for up to 7 days.

You should absolutely spend the money on the morning after pill, its a lot cheeper than a baby!!

I know its a huge inconveniance spending the money, but a baby and the cost they will incur is much worse!

This is the risk and responsibility you must del with when you choose to be sexually active. Its not your fault the condom split, but it is up to you to make that small chance of preganancy, no chance of pregnancy by taking the mornign after pill NOW. (its only effective for 3 days)

In the mean time to prevent future brekages ensure you boyfriend has the right sized comdom. Measure his girth, normal condoms are for men between 12 and 13 cm in circumference. If he is smaller her need slimline condoms, if he is larger he needs large condoms. The use of lubrication will also reduce the chance of future breakage.

To conclude, I know the money is tight, but the risk of a baby at this point in your life is not worth it, go and spend the money.

Hope this helps
