She needs to eat breakfast or she will find that she will end up putting weight on, not losing it. Breakfast get your metabolism going for the day if you dont eat it then your body goes into starvtion mode. Your bodies metabolism slows right down and stores as much fat as possible. So what she does eat during the day will be stored as fat instead of being used as energy. And when she does start to eat properly the weight will really go on.

Tell her to eat wholemeal toast or muesili something that is health and will make her feel full for longer. It really does work i'v lost weight by just changing from white bread toast to muesili with low fat milk for breakfast and now i fell fuller for longer and i don't snack on junk mid morning cause i'm feeling hungry. Goodluck to her.

A male reader, somewhat_anonymous United States +, writes (20 August 2007):

She should not skip any meals. She can change them, but not skip. Otherwise the body thinks it is starving and when she does eat, her body will do what it can to hold on to those calories.

In some Nazi camps during WWII, they fed the prisoners every other day. They figured that this would starve them and give them low resistance, but not kill them off, as they wanted them to work like slaves. They actually found that the prisoners, while weak and lathargic, were gaining weight in the form of bodyfat.

Your friend should instead eat about the same amount (unless she tends to eat a ton) throughout the day, but split it up into more meals, like 5-6. She shouldn't skip a dinner, but she could just stick to protein and/or vegetables. This really isn't as easy as it sounds. She should also get some exercise in.

Enzian agony auntWell you are right, breakfast is the most important meal of the day. It will give you energy for the day. Lunch is also very important. If she will skip a meal to loose wight, she should skip supper. This is because what you eat in the evening, you will not burn stright, but store in your body for the time you will need it. If she can't skip supper, because she will feel too much hungry, she should eat something, but try to avoid carbohydrats.

Hope this helps. If you would like to get some suggestion how to lose wight in a healthy way, just make a follow up or write to me personally.

Greetings, Enzian

i dont think skipping breakfast will help your friend lose weight at all. you're right it is a really important meal of the day, it gets you energized and gets your mind and body working for the day.

without it i'm sure she's not doing her body any good at all. she probably wont drastically lose weight and she'll be tormenting herself by being tired and unenergized through the day, as well as being hungry!

BUT if your friend is really set on losing some weight, then just tell her that eating less of what she usually eats doesnt help, but eating HEALTHY does. it always seems like the most difficult thing in the world to lose weight with all the marketed crash diet plans around, but all anyone really needs is to eat healthy balanced meals, and regular excercise (not the kind of excercise where you go to the gym and run 10 miles on the treadmill.) just a 20 minute jog around the neighborhood will do, or a nice walk.

A female reader, anonymous, writes (19 August 2007):

well I don't always eat breakfast so I don't know. And sometimes I eat dinner for breakfast. And most times I just eat when I am hungry. Whether it is breakfast lunch or dinner, you are just concerned that your friend is skipping meals. If you want to lose weight the reality is that you have to eat less. So your friend is going about this by skipping her usual breakfast.

If her typical breakfast consists of lots of lard (eggs, bacon, biscuit drenched in butter) then I don't think it is a bad idea to skip breakfast. But it is also harmful to starve yourself. But you may be surprised to know that humans actually don't need as much food as many actually eat on a daily basis. Just tell her that instead of starving herself she should eat when she is hungry and to vie instead to eat healthy stuff. And do more exercise.
