There really is no surefire technique or trick to shaving your area that will guarantee no razor burn, cuts or a perfect job.
Either way if you haven't shaved previously you will most likely get some shaving bumps and possibly some small cuts. This is normal when you first start shaving but will improve over time.
Use a moisterizing shaving gel, or if possible a shaving gel specifically designed for bikini line like bikini zone and its' line of products. Purchase a multi-blade razor, something like a Gillette 'Venus' razor works well and avoid ever using a dull razor or a single blade for this area.
Work the gel into a lather and use precision - take your time and be careful not to irritate any area that is already inflamed.
You will probably have shaving bumps, irritated skin but this will heal in a short period of time.

It depends on how much you are planning on shaving off. Either way, get yourself a men's shave cream, it will help so much. Personally, when I shave, I go sideways on the top part and then against the grain and then look for the stragglers. If you are going bald, against the grain works for me on the lips, but again use the men's shave cream.
If you are looking for something quick and easy, you could try an electric shaver. I have one by Remington that I love and it is a wet/dry. It gets really close and I have only nicked myself a few times over the past two years. It has attachments for length, so I can get clean on certain parts and leave a little length on the others. I use that for the most part and do the really good shave job every once in a while for a "treat". If you're not used to shaving, it make take a little time to get your rhythm down for it, but eventually you'll be able to do it in 5 min or less.
