I would just like to add to what oldfool said that China also has an appaling human rights record from the treatment of its own people. Westerners are often shoked at the level of state control that the Chinese government has over their citizens e.g imprisoning political dissidents etc.

I'll answer this question, if it's permitted.
From 1644 till the early 20th century, China was an empire. It was ruled by a group of people who invaded from the northeast, known as the Manchus. The Manchu empire consisted not only of the Chinese, but also the territory of the Tibetans, Muslims, Mongolians, and of course the Manchurians themselves. These territories belonged to the same empire, but were separate areas, separately governed.
When China became a modern country, the Chinese basically decided that they wanted to keep these people -- the Tibetans, the Mongolians, and the Muslims of Xinjiang -- as part of their country and its territory.
However, these peoples didn't necessarily agree. Tibet was independent for a while last century, and has had a lot of rebellions against Chinese rule. Xinjiang also has an independence movement. Of all these peoples, only the Mongolians (only a part of the Mongolians, in fact) now have their own country, which is Mongolia. All the rest stayed part of China.
China is absolutely unwilling for any of these people to become independent. There are several reasons. First it would mean the breakup of China. Secondly, the Chinese feel that these territories belong to them. When Western countries support independence by Tibetans, they get upset.
Unfortunately for the Chinese, the Dalai Lama is running a government in exile (in India), which gains a lot of sympathy from people in the West. The Chinese themselves believe that the riots in Tibet were just a big plot by the Dalai Lama to make the Chinese look bad in the year of the Olympics, and they are very angry at the way Western media are supporting the Tibetans. Of course, they are unwilling to admit that the riots might actually have the support of many people in Tibet. People in these places are upset because more and more Chinese moving in, swamping their territories with Chinese people and also swamping their culture.
As you can see, it's a very complicated situation.

In fact I'll answer. Some people want to protest their point of view which is that China violates human rights. It's a good opportunity for those people to get publicity. Others disagree.
