A male reader, anonymous, writes (15 September 2006):

the DNA of the child would have a mix from mother and father. THe chromosomes from the father would cross over with the chromosomes from the mother to create variation. a sinple DNA test can determine the father called a polymerase chain reaction in which a small amount of DNA is amplified and the genetic code from the father can be matched up with the childs. look up paternal PCR on the web! i know this sounds very compicated.

stina agony auntHi Worried,

I did a quick search online and tried to find the answer to your question. Here is what I found out (all the sites basically said the same thing):

Q: There are two possible fathers, and they are related. Is this a problem?

If two possible fathers are related as full brothers, half brothers, or father and son, they may share many of the DNA markers used in paternity testing. This means that if proper precautions are not taken, both men could test positive as the child's biological father. DNA testing is strong enough to determine paternity in a case involving related alleged fathers, but the laboratory must be aware of the situation before the testing process begins.

Here's the site address: http://www.dnacenter.com/faq/faq-paternity-start.html#4

They also have a phone number you can call, but if you're out of the US they still have a lot of info to look over.

Take care.

A female reader, sjd +, writes (15 September 2006):

sjd agony auntJust as everyone has their own unique fingerprint, everyone has their own unique DNA. While DNA may be similar in families, it is still different for each person. One can take DNA from 2 different siblings or a son and father and tell they are different, but can also usually tell they are related. The reason for this is DNA is made up of a combination of their parents DNA. Each parent donates 23 chromosomes as well as the mother's mitochondrial DNA. This means that in a very simplified and general way, approximately half of ones dna comes from their mother and half from their father. The DNA then undergoes splitting and recombination, which during this time several mutations may occur causing the dna to change even more than just by recombination. From there, it forms a fertilized egg which then develops into a child put very very simply. Therefore, eveyones DNA has it's own unique characteristics, and if your friend were to get a DNA test to prove the paternity of her child, they would be able to tell because everyone's dna is different. Good Luck and I hope this helps.
